Associate Professor at the Informatics Department (Departamento de Informática), Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia , Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Member of the Distributed Systems Group of the Centro de Informática e Tecnologias da Informação (CITI ). Elected member of the Coordination Committee of CITI. Current head of the Informatics Department of FCT/UNL.

Short Professional Curriculum

José Legatheaux Martins obtained his Informatics Engineering and MSc degrees from UNL and his PhD degree in Distributed Systems from Université de Rennes in France. He is an Associate professor of Distributed Systems and Computer Networks at FCT/UNL and coordinates the Distributed Systems Research Group. Currently he also heads the Department of Informatics of FCT/UNL. From 1983 to 1986 he was a researcher at INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique) in France were he worked on the Chorus Distributed Operating System and in the SOR team. From 1987 up to now he has been teaching and researching, first in the University of Lisbon and then in the New University of Lisbon.  From 1990 to 1994 he lead the national project that established the portuguese branch of the Internet and lead the PUUG – Portuguese Unix Users Group, and the Portuguese EUnet branch, both not for profit organizations promoting Open Systems and the TCP/IP network suite and the Internet adoption in the industry. He was founder of an Internet Service Provider that has been acquired in 2000 by the US based Qwest Communications Company. From 1996 up to 2004 he served as member of the board and technical consultant of two telecommunications companies. His current research interests are mobile computing, publish/subscribe systems and wireless sensor networks.

Research Interests and Projects

His current research interests are mobile computing, publish/subscribe systems, P2P systems, Internet-Scale Content Diffusion Systems.

Research projects of the Distributed Systems Group of CITI were he participates:

LiveFeeds (2008 - 2010) - The LiveFeeds project intends to address the chalenges of large-scale publish/subscribe systems to scalably support the dissemination of micro-news (RSS) feeds.

FEW (2005 - 2007) - The "Files EveryWhere Project" intended to address the challenges of transparently using mobile storage.

MobiWorkFlow (2002 - 2006) - The main goals of this project were to provide tools to support the development and management of workflow managed activities for mobile workforces.

Databricks (2000-2004) - This   project focused on the design and implementation of adequate system support to ease the implementation of new applications for mobile environments. To this end, it provided, not only a set of data-management solutions suitable for different mobile settings, but also a specialized component-based framework, and associated linguistic support, that allows programmers to easily create adequate data-management solutions for their applications.

Mobisnap (1999- 2004 ) - The main goal of the Mobisnap project was to provide methodologies and tools to deploy relational database applications on mobile computers. The project had three main areas: cache definition, mobile transaction model and divergence control as a way to minimize the risk involved with using outdated information.  

DAgora (1996-1997, 1998-2003) - The objective of the DAgora project was to create a platform to support the development of collaborative applications for large-scale environments that included mobile computers.

Courses

He gave courses on several topics in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. These last years, the regular courses he was responsible for at FCT/UNL were the following: Redes de Computadores (Computer Networks), at the undergraduate level, and Redes de Computadores TCP/IP (TCP/IP Networking), at the graduate level.  He also coordinates and teachs with others collegues a course named Tópicos Avançados em Sistemas Distribuídos (Advanced Topics in Distributed Systems) also at the graduate level.
