The PDP/CITI group is involved in projects in the following areas:

Distributed Languages and Execution Models

As Partner:

Problem-Solving Environments and Grid Computing

The PDP/CITI group will be responsible for the Grid Computing component in two recently proposed multidisciplinary initiatives at the FCT/UNL Campus, for promoting multidisciplinary research on Information Science and Life Sciences, and research on Information Science and Earth, Sea, and Space Sciences, jointly with other research centres of Faculty of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT/UNL). One of the goals of this initiative is to host post-doctorate researchers at the FCT/UNL Campus, to push forward the above mentioned areas and to participate in research and education programmes.

The PDP/CITI group is also actively involved in the launching of the FCT/UNL Campus Grid, and the promotion of a Grid-related consortium involving other Portuguese universities and industry partners.

In this area it is currently involved in the following  projects:

As Coordinator:

  • TransGRID Parallel and Distributed Computing with Computational Clusters and Grids: a project funded by the CITI Centre with partners: the CITI Multimedia, and Natural Language Processing groups and researchers from the Environmental Sciences and the Material Sciences Departments of FCT/UNL. The project encompasses four main dimensions: applications, abstractions and models, tools and environments, and distributed execution support.
  • Linux Cluster and Grid Computing: a project funded by the IBM Equinox Shared University Research (SUR) Awards Program, for Education and Research on Parallel and Distributed Computing, and for promoting application development through multidisciplinary collaborations.

As Partner:

  • Software Tools and Environments for Grid Computing: This research is focused on abstractions and models for distributed and grid computing (based on design patterns, dynamic groups, and distributed agents). Part of this research is being developed as a bilateral cooperation of CITI with the Distributed Collaborative Computing Group of the School of Computer Science of Cardiff University, UK.
  • Joint Curriculum Development for High-Performance and Grid Computing: a project funded by the European Union AsiaLink Programme, in partnership of CITI with Tsinghua University (China), the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences (China), and the Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), for development of course modules for HPC and the Grid, preparation of lab materials and a text book, also involving joint lectures and joint supervision of PhD students. The PDP group is also responsible for related post-graduation courses at FCT/UNL.
  • CYTED-Grid: a project funded by the IberoAmerican Programme for Development in Science and Technology, to promote education and use of Grid technologies involving IberoAmerican countries (we recently joined this project).
